BTS Meal review

McDonald’s went global with its new meal in collaboration with global sensation BTS. Does it live up to its hype?

Info

The meal costs 450 INR, a premium for the BTS brand name. Individually configuring the meal costs about 370 INR, but this doesn’t include the special sauces. Each meal contains 10 chicken nuggets, a regular coke, a medium fries and two special nugget dipping sauces.

The Regular Stuff

The fries, coke and nuggets are typical of McDonalds. I stand by the fact that McDonalds has the best fast food fries. They’re saltier that others, but pack a great potato to salt ratio. Soft on the inside, with the right amount of crunch. I don’t like fries that feel more like potato chips than fries. The same can be said for the chicken nuggets. They were a nice and crispy golden brown on the outside, with the soft white chicken (not sure if it is chicken but it tastes good) inside.

The Sauces

The only reason to purchase the meal is the sauces, and I can say with confidence that you will only be half disappointed.

Cajun Sauce

I cannot overstate how wrong McDonalds was to call this Cajun. An insult to the rich flavours of the Cajun cuisine. It lacked any Cajun flair, and I wouldn’t be able to differentiate it from regular McDonald’s mustard. Maybe a little spicier? Nothing to write home about, definetly a let-down.

Sweet Chilli

Absolute banger. McDonald’s please make this a permanent menu item. If you’ve had the McDonald’s sweet and sour sauce that is sold outside India, it’s very similar but with an Asian twist. The sauce delivers an instant sweet hit, followed by a higher but not overpowering twinge of sourness, followed by a very mild tinge of spice. The sauce isn’t hot at all, especially for us Indians. Even my sister who has an extremely low spice tolerance was perplexed as to why it was sweet chilli, when the chilli quotient was negligible. But still, the overall sweet and sour like flavour profile was a fresh break.

Conclusion

Was the meal worth it, the 80 INR markup for 2 sauces isn’t great. But the novelty of it all with the special BTS packaging, and the exclusivity of it being a limited run item makes it appealing to a lot of people. I love the sweet chilli sauce, but if I could get the regular sweet and sour sauce McDonald’s sells abroad I wouldn’t miss it that much. But It’s worth a try for reasons stated above and the amazing sauce (sauce in singular, not the fake Cajun sauce).
