Bangalore Oota Company

On a lazy Sunday, there is nothing better than a scrumptious brunch. Can the Bangalore Oota company deliver a Mangalorean delight?

Order

The restaurant being far away, meant that I had to order well in advanced. For my Sunday lunch, I had to use their WhatsApp menu and place an order by Saturday night. Then at round 1 pm , their delivery guy dropped of my order.

Thali (Lunchbox)

A standard veg thali. It came with Rasam, a portion of rice, a potato vegetable ,a mixed vegetable curry, and curd.

The rasam was great, your typical tangy and spicy tomato rasam. It wasn’t too dilute and was potent enough to pack a punch, while not being overwhelming.

The Potato vegetable was really nice. The potato was soft and well cooked, with the typical Mangalorean flair. A mild twinge of coconut, didn’t overpower but complimented the spicy and tangy potato very well. The wonderful crispy curry leaves elevate the dish.

The vegetable curry is a mixed bag. The gravy was rather bland, with a dominating coconut flavour. The masala didn’t shine, and often times just tasted like mildly spiced coconut milk. I’m personally not a huge fan of the vegetables inside, cauliflower and peas aren’t my favourite.

Chicken and Neer Dosa (Kori Ajadina with Pelatta Gatti)

The chicken was great. The gravy was thick, well spiced, and had a wonderful texture and taste. The coconut on this one was just right!

The ratio of chicken to curry was great, and although a price of 425 INR isn’t low, I was satisfied with the large portion of curry and the 5 neer dosa’s.

Neer dosa was excellent: thin, not too salty and didn’t fall apart that easily.

The meat on the other hand, was overcooked for me. It was very tough for chicken and very chewy. I was also not a huge fan of the fact that the dish was drowning in oil.

Mutton Pulav (Bannur Mamsa Pulav)

This was marvellous. The green rice was so wonderful. The lovely biryani-esque flavour, with the subtle hints of that classic Mangalorean coconut and the minty undertones led to a flavour explosion. The portion was good. This was the highlight of the order.

The egg, curd and chutney all paired well with the rice. I’ve heard the meat was great as well, plentiful and falling off the bone.

Overall

I definitely enjoyed the meal from the Bangalore oota company. If you detest coconut, this isn’t for you. For those of you that like Mangalorean cuisine, I’d definitely recommend them. Especially for the mutton pulav.
